What does “DM” mean? Meaning and how it is used

Updated 2026-10-10 · Also searched as: chat, direct message, private messages, messaggi

DM means direct message: a private message between two accounts that nobody else can read. On social media it is the one-to-one chat; on OnlyFans it is the heart of the relationship between creator and fan. Anyone subscribed to a profile, even a free one, can write to the creator in DMs; she can reply, send unlockable content with a price attached and receive tips. «DM me» is the most common invitation in bios and posts.

Where the word comes from

The abbreviation was born on Twitter, where private messages between users were called Direct Messages as opposed to tweets, which are public by definition. From there «DM» became the generic name for the private inbox on almost every platform, Instagram first of all, and the verb to DM someone entered everyday speech in many languages: Italian fans say «dimmami» or «mi ha dimmato». In Italian the DMs are also called messaggi diretti, messaggi privati or simply chat. The idea itself is as old as the post: the direct message is the letter, the post is the notice pinned up in the town square.

How it is used today (on social media and OnlyFans)

On OnlyFans the chat is not an accessory: it is where almost everything happens. The profile is the shop window, the DMs are the shop. In chat the creator answers her fans, offers content with a price (the unlockable messages, with a blurred preview), receives tips and custom requests. A fan who subscribes to a free profile usually gets a welcome message within a short time, followed by offers of exclusive content. For many creators the chat is worth more than the profile itself in terms of income.

There is also the mass message: the same message sent in one go to all subscribers or to a group of them, for instance those who have gone quiet. It lands in your DMs like a normal message, but it was not written for you. With hundreds or thousands of subscribers, replying to everyone by hand is impossible: some creators get help from assistants or dedicated tools that handle the chat for them, at least in part. It is neither a secret nor a trick, but it helps to know it when reading the messages you receive. On social media, DMs are also the channel Italian creators use to point fans to their OnlyFans profile: «link in DM», because direct links are often restricted.

Not to be confused with

  • Comments: public, under a post, visible to every subscriber. A DM is private.
  • Telegram or Instagram messages: private chats too, but on other platforms. Creators often use Telegram for announcements and previews and OnlyFans for exclusive content.
  • Mass message: it arrives in your DMs, but it is the same text sent to many subscribers. A real DM is written for you.
  • Post: published on the profile and seen by every subscriber; a DM is seen by you alone.

FAQ

Can I message a creator without subscribing?

No. On OnlyFans the chat is reserved for subscribers to the profile. If the subscription is $0 you just subscribe for free; on a paid profile you need the monthly fee first.

Why do I receive messages with a price?

Those are unlockable messages: the creator sends a photo or video in chat with a blurred preview and a fixed price. You pay only if you want to see it; the ordinary chat stays free for subscribers.

Who actually replies in the DMs?

It depends on the creator. Many reply in person, others with the help of assistants or tools that manage the chat, especially when subscribers number in the thousands. A generic message identical for everyone is almost always a mass message.
